My story
Dr Joannes (Joe) Cheung MB BS is a general practitioner who graduated from the University of Sydney. He grew up in Hong Kong and developed his lifelong spirit of service from his Jesuit teachers at the Kowloon Wah Yan College. At 17, he followed his three older siblings to Sydney, studying year 12 and gaining entry into Medicine.
In 1984, Dr Cheung set up a general practice in Sydney’s inner west, where he practiced holistic family medicine for over 35 years. The practice grew over time to support four doctors and allied health practitioners who served the local community for decades. Dr Cheung often had the privilege of caring for three generations within one family. It was a family practice in the true sense.
With interests in counselling and medical hypnosis, he also practiced palliative care medicine as a hospice's weekend doctor for over a year.
Teaching has been an integral part of Dr Cheung’s medical career. For over two decades, numerous medical students doing their general practice term would spend three weeks with him, learning all facets of general practice.
Dr Cheung has a special interest in musculoskeletal medicine and acupuncture. He is particularly interested in how myofascial trigger points are involved in the causation of pain and how to treat them. In 2008, he learned about a newly discovered type of acupuncture that was particularly effective in treating trigger points. Discovered by a Western-trained Japanese doctor, this treatment was called Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture (YNSA).
In 2019, Dr Cheung retired from full-time general practice to become more involved with medical teaching. For the first year, he took more teaching sessions at the University of Sydney’s General Practice Department. He also ran acupuncture workshops for the Australian Medical Acupuncture College, of which he has been a member for many years.
In 2023, Dr Cheung decided to write and illustrate a textbook about musculoskeletal medicine and its conventional medical treatments, filling the need for a practical guide for new medical graduates faced with common musculoskeletal presentations. The manuscript then evolved to include the art of palpating for myofascial trigger points and finally added the modality of YNSA.
Dr Cheung has a special interest in the Arts. His favourites are sculpture, jewellery making, watercolour painting, and Chinese calligraphy. He also enjoys woodwork, gardening, cooking, snow skiing, and tennis.
‘Common Pain Syndromes, A New Approach’ is Dr Cheung’s first book.
